Interface down due to link down Vs Interface hardware failure

Hi...I have a questiion

I have a 3845 router . Is there any way to differenciate between

1. "interface down" alerts generated due to Link terminating on it fails And

2. "interface down" alert generated due to "hardware" issue.

I am not able to simulate the scenario and I don't know what "alerts" can be seen in router logs if any interface fails due to Hardware issue with it.

Hi tarun,

It is very difficult to know the interface down due to what issue. However If it is due to hardware problem i think there must be some

logs generated in router.

To think it otherway you can see some controller alarm in sh controller output or look for counters in carrier transitions to know the down condition due to link issue.
