InterVLAN Routing Issue

Hi, I have a number of access layer switches that have trunks to a 3750 performing InterVLAN routing with the use of SVIs. I am in the middle of migrating our addressing space, I have just shutdown vlan 1 which was using a 172.x.x.x address space, and no shut vlan 99 which is now using a 10.x.x.x address here is my issue, the switches still have 172.x.x.x as their ip default-gateway, but the new 10.x.x.x ip is able to communicate (PING, Telnet, etc) to the 172.x.x.x address space still being used, I would have assumed this would be impossible as it is on a different subnet? Any knowledge on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks

You probably have proxy arp turned on the SVI's . The gateways should be fixed regardless.
