IOS Upgrade- eFSU

I upgraded the 6509 V-E in the lab from 122-33.SXI3 to 122-33.SXI9. There was a 4 minute outage on the line card, after I ran the commannd "

issu runversion". I wanted to know why this happened and if there is a way to upgrade seamlessly (no outage on the line card) Thanks

Re: IOS Upgrade- eFSU

Hi Praveen, Reza,

From the 6500 conf guide - eFSU part there is some outage time considerations depending on the nature of the module and its memory (if the module supports eFSU preload or not).

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/issu_efsu.html#wp1095791

=============================

The following modules support eFSU preload:

WS-X67xx modules

SIP-400 and SIP-600

All other modules undergo a hard reset at switchover, and the software image loads after the module restarts.

Before the "issu runversion" the below command should then gives an indication about the impact...

Router# show issu outage slot all

Slot # Card Type                               MDR Mode    Max Outage Time

------ ----------------------------  -----------         ---------------

     1 CEF720 8 port 10GE with DFC   WARM_RELOAD        300 secs

     2 96-port 10/100 Mbps RJ45          RELOAD             360 secs

           .....

=======================================

It is just an idea...In my for all the eFSU (especially in VSS) I perfromed, I always had a minimal impact..

As asked by Reza, the 6500 sups were in SSO configured/operational mode..So maybe the model of your line card impacted by the 4-minutes impact was not supporting eFSU preload ?

Best regards.

Karim

Are the Sups configured in SSO mode?  There should not that much of down time if SSO is configured.  The fail over from one Sup to the other is sub-seconds

Thanks for your response.

Yes SSO is enabled.

With eFSU the upgrade is usually seamless (sub-second).  Now I am wondering if there was an issue with the IOS.

Since all your modules are in the 65xx series, most likely as per the link Karim provided, the went under a hard reset
