Is IPv6 supported by 3550?

Dear,

No IPv6 information on 3550 on www.cisco.com.

It's seem that IPv6 is available on 3560 and higher level platform.

Could somebody give me assured information about this?

Many thanks!

Hi Find below mentioned details.IPv6 is available on 3550.

Model Catalyst 3550 48 Switch

12.2(44)SE

IPv6 Routing - EIGRP Support Enables IPv6 Support to EIGRP

IPv6 Services: Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) - IPv6 Address Family Support for Neighbor Information This feature will add a TLV to CDP to exchange IPV6 information for network management purposes.

IPv6 Services: Extended Access Control Lists Add support for extended ACLs (routing header types, transport layer ports, etc) for IPv6 traffic.

IPv6 Services: Standard Access Control Lists IPv6 Services: Standard Access Control Lists

IPv6: Anycast Address IPv6 Anycast Address Support defines a new type of address, known as an "anycast" address that allows a packet to be routed to one of a number of different nodes all responding to the same address.

IPv6: ICMPv6 Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) in IPv6 functions the same as ICMP in IPv4 (RFC 792). ICMPv6 generates error messages, such as ICMP destination unreachable messages and informational messages like ICMP echo request and reply messages. Additionally, ICMP packets in IPv6 are used in the IPv6 neighbor discovery process, path MTU discovery, and the Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) protocol for IPv6.

And in the configuration guild.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3550/software/release/12.2_44_se/configuration/guide/swintro.html

It's said that: In this document, IP refers to IP version 4 (IPv4). Layer 3 IP version 6 (IPv6) packets are treated as non-IP packets.

And no IPv6 command listed.

This information is mentioed in Feature navigator, if you select 3550...

Re: Is IPv6 supported by 3550?

I think this says it all.

from:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps646/prod_end-of-life_notice0900aecd8029f777.html

Enterprise customers are encouraged to migrate to Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series and Catalyst 3560 Series switches, which provide new and enhanced functionality including IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE), higher-density Gigabit Ethernet (GE), and IPv6 routing. The Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series switches feature Cisco

so, NO, it is not supported on 3550 switches but it is supported on 3560 and 3570 switches.

maybe it is there, but it is not supported.. :)

Re: Is IPv6 supported by 3550?

I think what it is trying to say is that the 3550's can switch IPv6 traffic but not route IPv6 traffic. If you have a need for a multilayer switch that does support most IPv6 features go with either the 3560/3750 series switches.
