IT Room for new building

Hello

We trying to work up a new plan for adding on additional building with 3 floors Part of the new structure would be a dedicated space for the IT dept.

We are going to have only 4 switches ( 3560 and 3750 series) with patch panels. No servers

I need a suggestion with the following

- What should be rack size ?

- What should be recommended room size and space allocation ?

- Air Condiitioning and Air Flow

Any tips appreciated

Thanks

Hi Samir,

No Need of UPS- I suggest you revisit this. As already mentioned by Jason, normally there is a time lag before office/building generator kicks in. So I would recommend go for a 1.5K UPS (or less if budget is tight) to cover that time or else the switches may experience a crash.

Rack- you can go with a low price 24U 2post rack. Make sure to check the weitght support in the specifications.

http://www.racksolutions.com/relay-racks.html

Space: The above link also lists Rack dimensions. To that, add few more sq ft for techs to move around and based on switch dimentsions.

Cooling: All you need is a small system. Check the below link and also google for less capacity unit availabiliy.

On the other hand if they can run vents to the room from office/user space AC that will do as well, but make sure that runs during weekends/vacation days as well (some firms programme shuch a way there is minimal or no AC during weekends)

At the end, whatever you choose in terms of room space and cooling make sure to run those numbers by your contractors.

Hi Samir,

Here are my thoughts..

Cabinet/network rack :

4 switches - 4U

Each 24port panel : 1U, so 4switches requires total 8U for patch panels (48 port switches).

Up links from DC- ex: Fiber and ethernet back up - add another 2U.

UPS in the rack upto 4U

This gives you- 18U. This is just a sample and it can change if you want to add more HW in future.

I think you can get a 30U rack cabinet. Can go by 24U as well, but its your choice.

Space: Go with Rack dimensions + one of two ppl should be able to move freely.

AC/Air Flow: Give the switch & UPS heat dessipation information to elctrical contractor, they should be able to get you correct specs on this.

Hi mvsheikh123,

Thanks for your inputs

No need for UPS since they will be connected to emergency power or generators.

I will use 48port patch panel means 8U

4 Switches means 4U

Space Can you suggest standard cabinet rack dimensions required.

AC/Air Flow: Still i am confused. I have decide my recommendations then I will give them.

Thanks

Samir

hi mvsheikh123 and other experts

Thanks for your clarifications.

Now I have thought to for switch rack with 24u with dimension 600 cm x 800 cm and I meter for personnel and air flow.

I am thinking to for 2m x 2m room space.

I will ask the contractor to run vents to the room from centralize  AC

Finally a UPS with 1.5K

Would that be OK ?

Thanks

Hi Samir,

2M is little over 6ft- so that sounds right. Also, when you place the rack, make sure the door to the room opens freely (some of the rooms have doors opens inwards). For UPS, try to get network interface card as well.

All the best and please mark this discussion answered, so that someone with similar requirements can review.

Thx

Hi,

What should be rack size ?

If all your switches are going to one rack, you only 4RU space since each one is only 1RU.

So, you can get half size cabinet and put all of them in there

What should be recommended room size and space allocation ?

Air Condiitioning and Air Flow

Our generator requires that we keep the devices up for 6 seconds before it is live. Does your have a similar constraint?

As mvsheik suggests you need space to move around. If a standard 2 post rack takes up a 2x2 ft square, and you only have 1, you need to place the rack in the center of a 6x6 or 36 sq ft space. That will give plenty of room for personnel and air flow.
