Jumbo frame impact

Sir,

We are considering to enable jumbo frame support up to 9K for some DB servers, which recommend to use jumbo frame. Do you know is there any area we should pay spcecial attention on jumbo frame? Does Cisco has any recommendation on jumbo frame design/implementation?

Thanks a lot!

Jumbo frame impact

enabling jumbo frames support towards hosts only can be a risky business.

The idea is to have jumbo frames support enabled on every switch and on every interface within the path; and this can be problematic if you run a multi vendor network.

If you don't comply with that you risk to encounter issues and unexpected drops which will be a pain to pint point and correct.

Usually jumbo frames support is enabled on core facing interfaces in DCs or in SP networks but some vendor might suggest to enable it towards access too. It is debatable but that is.

There is a nice blog post which sheds some light on the topic highlighting pros and cons and explaining in details how to enable that:

http://www.bitplumber.net/2009/03/how-to-configure-jumbo-frames/

I suggest you to have a look at that.

From Cisco perspectice I can point you to this other interesting document:

hope this helps

Riccardo
