Limit bandwidth on a switch-port?

We want to share an Internet-connection with a C2960 and limit the bandwith on each port (each customer on a port).

I try the parameter "max-reserved-bandwidth" on an interface but there was no difference in bandwith on this port.

Is there a way to limit the bandwith on a switch-port?

Or are there other opportunities?

Thanks!

Re: Limit bandwidth on a switch-port?

You can limit the connection by police or shape the traffic based on customer requirments or you can use rate limt command.

For max-reserved-bandwidth is just how much you will remain for routing and other issue which is by default 75%.

I hope this is inforamtive for you and rate if it is.

Re: Limit bandwidth on a switch-port?

Thanks for the information.

I will explain a bit more....

We haven an Internetconnection of 10 Mb, connected on a C2960 switch. We want to limit the bandwidth on each switch-port to 1 Mbps.

What is the best command we can use on the switch? Do you have some examples for me? (I am not a Cisco specialist)

Thanks!

Re: Limit bandwidth on a switch-port?

if the 2960 is capable of Layer 3 switching (meaning routing) you could use a CAR policy. Commited Access Rate.

The Committed Access Rate (CAR) and Distributed CAR (DCAR) services limit the input or output transmission rate on an interface or subinterface based on a flexible set of criteria.

you can use the rate-limit command on the interface.

Re: Limit bandwidth on a switch-port?

I think interface rate-limiting isn't supported on the 2960, specificaly IOS 12.2(25)SEE

Re: Limit bandwidth on a switch-port?

Hello,

You can use policing and shaping on the switch ports to achieve the same. Please see the link below of configuring the same:
