Load Balancing Between Gateways.

Hi All,

Need Solution here to understand GLBP load balancing  or any other possible solutions which would best suit our requirement.

Here we have 2 X 5 Meg Ethernet connections terminating on seperate CPE routers. The ASA boxes are behind CPE connected vial Layer 2 Switch. The Tunels will be formed over ASA boxes to remote location with similar setup at remote end also

                                                 [ CPE 1 ]  ------------------- [ PE ] ---------------------- [ CPE 3 ]

[ ASA ] --- [ Layer-2 ] ----------.                                                                                            -------------- [ Layer-2] ----- [ ASA ]

                                                 [ CPE 2 ]  ------------------- [ PE ] ---------------------- [ CPE 4 ]

We are planing to deploy GLBP solution but here in this case CPE 1 and CPE 2 will see ASA box as Single Host so it does not seem to be Load balancing will happen between 2 gateway routers ( i.e CPE1 and CPE 2)

What Best Solution Can we deploy Here so that Load balancing can happen for the traffinc Initiating from LAN towards destination.!!!

Hi Darshan ,

No to worry

Simply you can configure IP SLA Track to monitor the WAN link.

So when ever your first WAN link will goes down then your ASA will send all traffic to only second link & vice versa.

Hi Darshan,

As per your senario ,

                                                 [ CPE 1 ]  ------------------- [ PE ] ---------------------- [ CPE 3 ]

[ ASA ] --- [ Layer-2 ] ----------.                                                                                            -------------- [ Layer-2] ----- [ ASA ]

                                                 [ CPE 2 ]  ------------------- [ PE ] ---------------------- [ CPE 4 ]

If you want thta ASA should use both link for in / out traffic then you can do with routing protocol or with static route.

If you r using routing protocol then , If ASA recevied route from both router with same metric & AD  then it will send packet to both router & automatically it will load balance.

Accourding to me : - You can load balance traffic using static routing.

"If you configured two static default route with same AD  in ASA towards both CPE router IP then ASA will send packet to both router & it will load balance."

Re: Load Balancing Between Gateways.

Thanks Chetan !

Can not enable any routing protocol on the ASA Boxes. The Second Option of enabling Default static routes pointing  to two different gateways is already suggested to a client but the query from client here is what if one of the gateway fails ? ASA will still try to push to that gateway even if it is down ! Client wants something to be implemented on Layer 2 platfrom !!

Re: Load Balancing Between Gateways.

Hi Chetan,

We will chek with  IP SLA enabled to track the WAN. This should resolve the issue. !! Thanks
