When I console into the my 3550 and 3560 switches i'm not able to see the messesage appear if a interface goes down. But If I use a putty session and telnet into my directly connected (i can't see the logs only on a sh log) or  telnet into the other switches from that switch I'm only able to see the logs by issuing a show log.

Type in 'term mon' and hit enter, let me know if this fixes the issue.

In addition to what johns stated, be careful doing a term mom for certain debugs. They can crash your telnet session if there's too much data. You mentioned tat you also aren't seeing log messages on the console. If you're wanting to, make sure you have 'logging console ' enabled.
