Major upgrade on 6880 VSS

Hello guys,
I'm planning to do an upgrade of a pair of 6880X in VSS (no IA) with a major gap between releases : 15.1(2) to 15.4(1).

I understand that ISSU process is not possible, so do you know any other way of doing the upgrade to limit the network downtime? I think the only way is to modifiy the "boot system ..." value and reload both chassis?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

You need a maintenance window to do this as you need to reboot both chassis.

1-Load the new IOS to both primary and stand-by switches.

2-change the boot variable to point to the the new IOS.

3-Save config.

4-Verify boot variable (show bootvar).

5-Reload both chassis ( redundancy reload shelf )

6-When both switches back online, verify that the new image is installed, verify connectivity, verify routing, switching, etc...
