Hi Gents,

I recently found out that obe of the stack port on my 3750x is faulty thus failig the ring status of my 2x3750x. With the troubkeshooting that i did, i finaly concluded that the problem is on the port of the master switch. See status below.

Switch# Port 1 Port 2 Port 1 Port 2

--------------------------------------------------------

1 Ok Down 2 None

2 Down Ok None 1

Now i'm a bit hesitant in doing the ptocedure that i have in mind. If sone please connfirm if my procedure is correct. Take note that this is a live environment.

-turn off switch1(master)
-switch 2 shoould take over as master.
-connect the new switch (rna'd switch to replace the master)
-reload the entire stack and switch one should take over the mastet state and get the config from switcch 2.

Thats what i have in mind, if someone could please verify if i'm right?. Thanks guys!

Hi Erwin,

To add a switch, as a master, to a stack, complete these steps:

Note: Make sure the switch you add into the stack has the same IOS version as the switches in the stack. Refer to Catalyst 3750 Software Upgrade in a Stack Configuration with Use of the Command-Line Interface to upgrade the IOS in a catalyst 3750 switch.

Issue the show switch command.to get the priority value of the members of the stack.

3750-Stk>show switch

                                               Current

Switch#  Role      Mac Address     Priority     State

--------------------------------------------------------

1       Slave     0016.4748.dc80     1         Ready

*2       Master    0016.9d59.db00     5         Ready

Change the priority value of the switch to be added to a value greater than the highest priority of the stack. In the illustration, the priority value has to be a value of more than "5.".

switch stack-member-number priority new-priority-value

Make sure that the stack is fully connected so that, when you connect the new switch, the stack will be at least in half connectivity, and do not partition.

With the new switch powered on, connect the StackWise ports of the switch to the stack.

The election for the stack master occurs, and the new switch will be elected as the master since it has the highest priority value.

The members of the previous stack will reboot themselves to join the new stack. After all the members come up, issue the command show switch to verify stack membership.

Hi!

I will be replacing a failty master switchand will no add a new one. I believe the procedures mentioned above is for asding a new master switch.

If i powered off the existing master, will the slave take over?
And when i connect the new switch to the stack, will it take over as a mastet and as a switch 1?
Will it download the config from switch 2?

Yes and this is what you want.

And when i connect the new switch to the stack, will it take over as a mastet and as a switch 1?

No it won't because you did not specify the switch priority and you did not reboot the stack.

If you want the new switch to take over, configure the switch priority (after the new switch has joined the stack) and reboot the stack.

If I plugged in the new switch, will it be switch number 1? I just dont want to mess up the ibterface configs and number.

And will it not ibherit the current priority set to switch 1?

Output looks good.  The only issue I can see is that your stack is only connected with only ONE stacking cable.

This means you don't have redundancy and your stacking "ring" is operating at half speed.

Thanks! So by the output can we conclude that its a hardware fault?

Not a hardware fault.  Someone possibly did not cable up the 2nd cable properly.

We already replaced the 2ndcable with a new one as advise by cusco tac hut ti ni avail. Now we are replacing the switch as it might be the stack port that is faulty.
