Measuring Backplane throughput for switches?

Medium size company moving towards all cisco switches but for now we have some 3com switches. To be able to get our budget of new switches we have to prove that the switches port density and backplane is overloaded per switch. We have monitoring tools but nothing seems to allow you to measure the fabric backplane throughput for a switch. I see the ports are measured in bps but is there a direction I can be guided to give my boss his mesaurement for throughput on the switch fabric. We need to prove that it is overloaded.
