What can I use as a media converter? our service provider dropping fiber to our data center and need to trunk these to our 6500 switches and no more fiber ports on them so we need a media converter. Can i use a 2960 as media converter. Thanks .

If it is just one fiber port, then you only need a media converter.  Don't waste a switch for one port.  I have used Transition Networks media converters to convert from fiber to copper and they work really well.

Have a look:

I wouldn't be using a 2960 switch to route traffic through into a 6500 switch.

Buy a new module for the 6500 which supports fibre or get propper media converters.

Thanks for the reply. We can't fit in more modules on the 6500 though so we have to use a media converter. Why would'nt the 2960 be good?

depends on your traffic and how much traffic switch can handle.

you can use 2960 what i think so using 2060 is better then media convertor.

thanks we're gonna go ahead and order couple of media converters.

If you have a 6500, the supervisor card itself has SFP port you can use.

we do but it's full
