Mixed 10GB/1GB upload switch

Good Morning everybody.

I need help finding a cisco product.

Currently I have a network with all 10/100 access switch (2950, 2960) with gigabit uplinks to a 2x6500(vss)

I have to choose the new access switches and I want them 10GB uplink capable.

I don't really need all that throughput now, but surely I'm not going to change all the access switches again just the day after ;)

Also, I don't have a 10GB ports line card on the 6500s, so I want the access switches 10GB capable, but I want to connect them at 1GB for now.

Is it (tecnically) possible to have a switch that can run both 1GB and 10GB fiber uplink ports?

Ideally, could a 10GB capable switch run a 1GB SFP optic in an SFP+ port?

If so, could you kindly help me suggesting the right product?

Hi,

You can get the 3850 series with this card (C3850-NM-2-10G) for your uplinks.  You can use 2 10Gig and 2 1Gig.  So, for now you can use the 1Gig ports until you are ready to go to 10Gig.  At that time you just need to purchase SFP+ and you are ready to go to 10Gig.

You can use 3650 series switches. Please refere table2 in below link

The SFP+ interface supports both 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports. Refer to Table 1 for a description of the basic switch models and the corresponding uplink ports. Refer to Table 2 for a description of the various uplink port interface options.

Besides the 3K switches, if you've been happy with your 2960s, the later variants, e.g. 2960-S and 2960-X, have modules that support SFP+.

Can you please kindly confirm my understanding?
Do you mean I can run safely a 1GB SFP into the SFP+ port of the 2960 switch and then, in the future, simply replace that interface with a 10GB one?
If so, this is a great news.

Since that are all access switches, I need only few features (Simple QoS, dot1x, BPDUguard and some more...) and have to buy a lot of them.
So 3x series are surely great, but I'd prefer to go with a simpler (and cheaper ;)) model for this task.

It depends on the model.  On 2960s yes that is possible see table-1 in this link:

On 2960-X and XR depends on the model but they do not come with ports that support 1 and 10gi.  It is either or and not both like the 2960s.
