MSFC2 Hardware Replacement

Hi All,

we have 2 SP with catos and 2 msfc with IOS, but I need to replace one of MSFC by memory problems. Do I need to upload IOS in MSFC? or only I need to boot MSFC in RMMON with the IOS in SP?

Thanks in advance.

MSFC2 Hardware Replacement

Hello,

In Hybrid mode (Catos+IOS) you need MSFC to have it's own image to boot.

The other thing is that both SP and MSFC have their own ROMMONs. The very first ROMMON when you power on device - is SP ROMMON and you load CATOS image from it. Later when SP is loaded you may shift console to MSFC and see what is it's state - w/o any image there it will be in ROMMON so yoy will be able to TFTP or Xmodem correct image to it.

Or you can simply swap the bootdisk of old MSFC you are replacing with the bootdisk of new MSFC to have old image on new MSFC. It may still fail to ROMMON  though in the beginign because of default boot records on new MSFC - but you can boot it with old bootdisk image from MSFC (RP) ROMMON.

Hope this helps,

Nik

Thanks for reply Nik,

If I change only te MSFC I need to upload IOS for this MSFC, but the catos Image remains in SP? or when I change the MSFC,  SP goes in RMMON too?.

Regards and thanks.

So to change the MSFC you will need to remove Supervisor from chassis, swap MSFC daughter card and install it back. It will start auto boot from the SP and boot SP image - or in case of any problem fail to SP rommon where you can boot it specifying correct CATOS from SP bootdisk: - image on SP bootdisk stays same as before (SP and MSFC have their own bootdisk cards).

Once SP is booted you can switch console or session into MSFC. It can auto boot from MSFC bootdisk (if you installed old bootdisk from old MSFC to the new one during the MSFC replacement) if boot variables are fine on new MSFC or fail to rommon. And you can boot correct IOS from MSFC rommon using boot command then.

Hope this helps,

Nik

Thanks again Nik,

I have 2 SP with  set system highavailability enable, the problem is in Sup1 that is in stanby mode, it could be fine to disable with  set system highavailability disable, and then change MSFC in SUP1?

That is not required - you can just power off or remove standby. You can check the whole replacement procedure here:
