On a L2 switch all interfaces are configured for MTU size as 9000.
But some hosts have MTU size as 1500 and some have MTU as 9000. Naturally there is a problem in the conversions. Is there anything on the switch side that we can configure to support the conversations between hosts with different MTU values. Something like slicing the jumbo frames into smaller frames and then forward it out to the interface where a host with small MTU is connected. Can we have a communication between host and a switch interface that will share MTU size that a host supports and then switch will use it to forward the frames.
There is no mechanism at L2 to fragement the frame. As you said, there will be an issue communicating between hosts which have different MTU's.
As you may know, Jumbo frames are typically used between servers located on the same Vlan or switch (or when both hosts supports it). If there is a need to communicate between end stations with different MTUs, an L3 device (e.g.router) is required for fragmentation.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
