nature of vtp transparent mode on vlan transportation

transparent mode VTP - the local vlan database is not propagated out to other switches.....ok.... therefore if there are several switches trunked together, running VTP transparent mode (802.1q) - will all vlan traffic be sent out to all the other trunked switches (even though one or more of them may not have all the same vlans configured on them) ? Even if an intervening switch does not have a particular vlan configured locally - would it pass on the traffic until it finally reached its destination in a switch further downstream ?

Hello Peter,

If the intermediate switches doesnot have a particular vlan, then the traffic for those vlans will be dropped. As far as there is a common vlan exists in all the switch database, all the switches will forward the traffic out their respective trunk ports.

Hi - thanks - so in following scenarion:-

Switch A is trunked to switch B and switch B is trunked to switch C (all 802.1Q).

Switch A has VLAN50 configured on it.

Switch B does not have VLAN50 configured on it.

Switch C has VLAN50 configured on it.

All switches are in VTP transparent mode.

VLAN50 traffic on switch A will NOT get to switch C?

That is correct traffic will not get between A and C if "B" does not have vlan 50 configured.
