Hi all, when we talk about the osi model, does each layer encapsulate from the layer above, ie layer 2 encapsulates layer 2 etc ?

Hi Carl,
Check this link how the data is process between two hosts in OSI 7 layers.

The encapsulating starts from layer 4 to layer 2. Layer 4 is called a segment. Layer 3 is called a Packet and LAyer 2 is called a Frame. The other layers are just processes that are performed on the data. Data Encoding /decoding and CRC error checking is performed from LAyer 7 to layer 4, then the encapsulations occur. Layer 2 to layer 1 is more a modulation scheme that takes the digitized data (Frame) and modulates it and shapes it to be placed out on the wire (media). That layer handles the Electrical/ Mechanical and functional standards for the media... Hope this helps...
