OSPF area type and id change query

Hi,

Iam planning to change the configured area type of existing core switch (L3-4507) from stub to normal area. As our environment is not too big (3locations) I do not see a need for this area to be stub and also I need to add extranet connection at this location via EBGP redtirbuting into OSPF. In addition to that, the current OSPF id ip picked up by the system not being used in prod/configured anywhere. It probably got the id when OSPF was enabled inital configuration.

Current ospf config:

router ospf 10

log-adjacency-changes

area 0.0.0.2 stub

network 1.1.1.4 0.0.0.3 area 0.0.0.0

network 10.29.10.0 0.0.0.3 area 0.0.0.0

network 10.0.0.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2

network 10.29.1.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2

network 10.29.2.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2

network 10.29.3.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2

network 10.29.4.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2

network 10.29.10.0 0.0.0.3 area 0.0.0.0

network 10.29.30.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2

< truncated network statements>

----------------------------------------------------------

Planning config changes:

router-id 192.168.x.x

no area 0.0.0.2  stub --> Convert ares type to normal

no network 10.0.0.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.2 --> we are advertising individual subnets.

For router-d to take affect, I need to do reset ospf process (clear ip ospf 10). Incase, if I choose to change the area type only , do I need to rest the OSPF process?

As additional information, this switch/router connected to 2 addl location via L3 p2p links ( 1.1.1.4/30 & 10.29.10.0/30). Both location core devices interconnected using another p2p link and set to area 0.

Thanks in advance

Are you planning to change the area number as well or only the type? In any case I believe you should lose the adjacency after making the change and once everything matches again then the adjacency should form, no need to clear the process.

I tested this. Area type change requires no process reset but OSPF router ID change requires to reload router or rest OSPF process.

Thx
