Ping result : Destination Host Unreachable and Request Time out

Hi all,

Recently we have installed some new servers on Nexus 2000 fexes connected on a Nexus 7000 chassis.

When we try to ping one of those servers we receive the following output. The same result we receive for the other servers aswell.

Switch# ping 10.16.2.6
PING 10.16.2.6 (10.16.2.6): 56 data bytes
36 bytes from 10.16.255.250: Destination Host Unreachable
Request 0 timed out
36 bytes from 10.16.255.250: Destination Host Unreachable
Request 1 timed out
36 bytes from 10.16.255.250: Destination Host Unreachable
Request 2 timed out
36 bytes from 10.16.255.250: Destination Host Unreachable
Request 3 timed out
36 bytes from 10.16.255.250: Destination Host Unreachable
Request 4 timed out

--- 10.16.2.6 ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.00% packet loss

When I check the arp table I get the following entry below, a few seconds later there is no arp entry anymore.

Switch# sh ip arp 10.16.2.6

Flags: * - Adjacencies learnt on non-active FHRP router
+ - Adjacencies synced via CFSoE
       # - Adjacencies Throttled for Glean
D - Static Adjacencies attached to down interface

IP ARP Table
Total number of entries: 1

10.16.2.6       00:00:19  INCOMPLETE      Vlan116

switch# sh ip arp 10.16.2.6

Flags: * - Adjacencies learnt on non-active FHRP router
+ - Adjacencies synced via CFSoE
       # - Adjacencies Throttled for Glean
D - Static Adjacencies attached to down interface

Does anyone have an idea what could be the cause of this issue?

Other devices in the same vlan don't have an issue.

Thanks,

best Regards,

Joris

Can you confirm: are you saying that none of the servers on this FEX are responding, but other servers on the same VLAN on a different FEX are OK?

What is the Vlan116 IP address (and mask) of the switch you are pinging from?

The puzzling thing is that you are clearly sending an ARP request on Vlan116, and getting no reply, but the "unreachable" message is from 10.16.225.250.

Ping result : Destination Host Unreachable and Request Time out

Hi,

We found the issue. The nic was simply not configured to forward this vlan.

When you do a ping and you get this result. It means you are trying to ping the device from another vlan.

PING 10.16.2.6 (10.16.2.6): 56 data bytes

36 bytes from 10.16.255.250: Destination Host Unreachable

Request 0 timed out

When you try to ping it from the same vlan you only get request timed out.

Best Regard,

Joris
