Re: pix 501 or 506e

Hi Carl,

Cisco PIX 506E provides two autosensing Fast Ethernet (10/100) interfaces. The Cisco PIX 506E delivers up to 100 Mbps of firewall throughput, 16 Mbps of Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) VPN throughput, and 30 Mbps of Advanced Encryption Standard-128 (AES) VPN throughput.

The PIX 501 includes an integrated 4-port Fast Ethernet (10/100) switch and a Fast Ethernet (10/100) interface. Ideal for securing high-speed broadband environments, the Cisco PIX 501 delivers up to 60 Mbps of firewall throughput, 3 Mbps of Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) VPN throughput, and 4.5 Mbps of Advanced Encryption Standard-128 (AES) VPN throughput

So 506 has more firewall and vpn throughput but has only 2 FE ports. Cisco 501 has 4 port switch and a FE interface, but has a little less throughput than 506. I would suggest 506E

Do any of these have a dmz port, and is there an easy way to configure for broadband environments ?

No, both 501/506 have only two ports: inside and outside, without any possibility to upgrade. 501 has a 4ports switch, but it is connected to inside interface.

It depends what's your understanding of the word: easy :-) For an experienced Cisco Eng. it takes a few minutes...
