PoE Question

hi experts,

lets say i forced a range of switch ports for PoE (power inline static), some ports will connect to IP phones and others would be just PCs. my question is, will the PoE enabled port harm the PC or other device not using PoE if i plugged them?

Re: PoE Question

Hello John,

I've read that it is important to wait 10 seconds before moving a cable from an IP phone that was receveing power to a PC NIC to avoid damages to the PC NIC.

power should be delivered only to a device that is requesting it see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_tech_note09186a00801189b5.shtml

poe devices has a characteristic resistance value that allow the switch port to detect them.

(802.3 af standard)

Cisco pre standard used the response to a pulse FLP to detect devices.

You should be fine, just remember to avoid to swap IP phones and PC NICs

Hope to help

Giuseppe
