Hello all, I recently picked up a CE500 switch and was wondering is there any way to forward data or mirror? I use packet sniffing software all the time with my existing setup and cant figure out a way to do it with this switch...

In the past ive always just forwared a port to another port running software, which gave a nice GUI and details...

Any advice on a way to sniff packets thru the switch using 3rd party software is greatly appreciated...

Hi Friend,

I believe you are trying to configure SPAN session like you do on other cisco swicthes correct?

On a CE500 switch you can configure this feature by using the Cisco Network Assistant.

This software is free for download for Cisco registered users from www.cisco.com/go/cna.

When you have the software application installed just open it and log in to the CE500.

From the CNA dashboard:

- Click on Smartport

- Click on the interface where you are going to connect the PC capturing the sniffer

traces.

- Click on Modify (A small pop-up box shows up)

- Click on Role

- Select the Diagnostics role, then choose the source port and select the VLAN you are

going to monitor

- Click on OK and then Apply.

Once you have set up the diagnostic port you can trace the traffic by using any Sniffer

software (like Ethereal, which is free for download at

http://www.ethereal.com/).

If you need any further information just let me know.

Thanks so much for the information....That was it for sure...

Just so I know in the future though, there is no way to enable "diagnostic" roles using the web interface? Only in the CNA?

I looked and did not see any role using the web interface, however I prefer using it for simplicity... and its the only cisco gear in my network and the CNA does not pick up any other gear I have... Is it possible to manually add my routers, APs etc?

Please be aware that we renamed Ethereal to Wireshark in May 2006: http://www.wireshark.org

Ethereal hasn't been under active development since then, and the site recommends upgrading to Wireshark: http://www.ethereal.com/appnotes/enpa-sa-00024.html
