Problem going from 802.3 to Ethernet II segments

I changed the encapsulation on my Windows XP laptop to 802.3 (from Ethernet II, default). I AM able to ping the local router (802.3 framed ICMP in both directions). But, when I try to ping a remote device off of my subnet it times out (sniffer shows packet goes out but nothing comes back). Ping is unhappy. When I ping FROM a remote device to my PC I get inbound Ethernet II packet (ICMP request) and my ICMP reply goes out 802.3. Ping is happy. Why can't my 802.3 ICMP, sourced from my workstation, not make it anywhere off my subnet?

Can you verify if the remote device is having any problems recognizing 802.3 frames? could it be possible that that remote device is getting the 802.3 frames but not responding atall?

The second thing is that since the ping from remote device works, it means that your ICMP replies are going out of your subnet to the remote device. Else ping would have been unsuccessful from that end too. So I think the network would not be a problem here.
