Problem with config register on 4506 Catalyst

I have a few switches that are having the same problem. I set the config-register to 0x2102 and when the switch boots it goes into ROMMON and I don't understand why. I have to set the config register to 0x101 for it to boot into config mode.

Am I missing something here, I thought the default was 0x2102 and it would boot into config mode.

Here are the show ver and dir of everything.

4506#show ver

Hi Mike,

The main difference between 0x2102 and 0x101 is that 0x2102 will boot the image specified by the "boot system" command whereas 0x101 will boot the first valid IOS image in flash.

The fact that it boots into ROMMON with 0x2102 most likely means that the "boot system" command is specifying an image that is not in bootflash.

HTH,

Bobby

But you can see the IOS image is in the boot flash

Mike,

Please paste the output of " show bootvar "

-amit singh

Here it is.....

4506#show bootvar

BOOT variable does not exist

CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist

BOOTLDR variable does not exist

Configuration register is 0x101

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Set the boot path as

4506(config)#boot system flash bootflash:cat4000-i9s-mz.122-18.EW2.bin

4506(config)#config-reg 0x2102

4506#wr mem

4506#reload

And it should be ok there after.

HTH

*Pls rate all helpfull post

After I posted what you wanted I figured it out and I realized I needed to do the commands you listed.

Thanks you,

Mike

I am going to try it this weekend and will rate your post after it works.

Mike

Mike,

This will work for you. The reason it was going to rommon because, you dont have any bootvariable set to boot the switch.By changing the rommon to 0x101, it was picking up the first valid image to boot from the flash.

thanks ankbhasi
