Problems upgrading Catalyst 3512-XL

using c3500xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC17.tar to update it.

I get this error

Determining the total flash size.

Extracting the info file from the tar image.

Reading the info file of the tar image file.

Actual free space 361472

Required Space 2923984

Software upgrade failed.

There is insufficient flash space for the new image.

Total free space required is 2923984 bytes.

Remove unwanted files from the flash and upgrade again.

the 3512 has a 3mb flash drive. After the switch is live, can I then delete everything in the flash to free up the entire 3MB to upgrade with?

is there a better way?

Re: Problems upgrading Catalyst 3512-XL

You will have to get rid of the existing file first . Then just copy your new file into flash.

Do not turn off the switch before getting a new image and boot statement inserted.

delete flash:c3500XL-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC3b.bin

also

delete flash:c3500XL-diag-mz-120-5.WC2a

You can do as above or try and follow cisco's too long explanation here .

Re: Problems upgrading Catalyst 3512-XL

can you do a "sh flash".

the new image requires around 3MB to load into the flash, but you've only this much "361472" left.

You'll need to delete the existing image of the flash first, then tftp the new image over. I don't recommend you delete everything in the flash, just delete the old flash image will do the job.

Make sure you've a copy of the switch config before doing the ios upgrade, and don't forget to set the boot path for the new image.

Re: Problems upgrading Catalyst 3512-XL

Do a dir flash: and see what is in there , you can get rid of any existing .bin files just make sure you do not turn off the switch until you get the new image into flash . If you have an image in a directory you can delete the directory with the delete /force /recursive flash: command , this will wipe out everything in that image directory . If you don't plan to use a gui interface you can delete the .html files too. To run the switch you just need a single valid switch image in flash and the corresponding correct boot statement pointing to that image . A tar file takes a lot more space , if you don't need gui use the .bin file instead . If need be post the dir flash: output here and I can tell you what to delete.
