What protocol(s) can be used as a standards based mechanism to prevent loops in a network with multiple bridges or switches?

Hi Friend,
It is Spanning Tree. If it is all cisco PVST+ or if you have multiple vendor switches then MSTP is a good choice provided all swithces support it.

Spanning tree protocol is used to eliminate layer 2 loops when you have redundant connectivity to switches.
There are different flavours of STP (802.1D) like.
Multiple spanning tree protocol (MSTP)
rapid spanning tree protocol (RSTP)
per vlan spanning tree protocol (PVST)
PVST+
Common spanning tree protocol
hope it helps .. rate if it does ...
