As real T1 circuits interfaces are clocked to the T1 transmission rate, there shouldn't be a need to shape.

What are you trying to do, emulate a T1 circuit's performance on something like Ethernet?

I am trying to shape traffic going to the provider via MPLS.  Do I need to shape MPLS traffic?

Maybe, maybe not.

It depends on multiple factors.  If your port speed is faster than some CIR and the provider drops or charges extra for overrate traffic, then you'll likely want to shape.  Sometimes, if the other side's bandwidth is less than the near side's, you'll want to shape to better manage any congestion.

MPLS vendors often can provide some QoS support.  Depending on what they offer, and your needs, you may not need to shape, but perhaps mark your traffic to take advantage of their QoS support.

Thanks Joseph.  I will look into that.  It makes sense to shape ethernet but not a T1.  For example if bandwidth is only allocated 50 mb put you can push out 100mb (Fast ethernet interface) then shaping would be necessary.

Exactly!
