"no keepalive" not working on 6506-E/IOS 15.1 adventerprise/routed port

Hi all,

just want to understand why the "no keepalive" doesn´t work...i always used it to get a port UP/UP on a router or a switch when having to set up a management-system for example, which autochecks all ports if they are UP.

Actually i´m confronted with the behaviour that exactly this trick won´t work for me...because i have to set up loads of actually not connected ports on this switch.

Gets quite tricky and time consuming if i cannot use the "no keepalive" for setting up monitoring on these ports. And for sure i will remove this again after my PRTG configuration.

Has anyone an idea why this isn´t working on this exact device? I tried on L2-ports also, they immediately go to DOWN7DOWN, no matter if i issue an "shut"/"no shut"...

Confused.

Thanks and many thanks for the tips in advance,

Andreas

...and btw its exactly the same on the other switch, a similar model with the same configuration...

"no keepalive" not working on 6506-E/IOS 15.1 adventerprise/rout

Hi Andres,

I have testet it on Catalyst 3850 w/ IOS 03.02.02.SE w/ the same result as yours.

The interface stays "notconnectet" no matter if I use "no keepalive" or not...

In the past it worked only on L3-ports in a router, not on dual-ports (L2 or L3) like in Catalyst 6500... or?

i did it (if i remind correctly) everytime on routers before...so i´m not quite sure if this would be perhaps the reason...hmmmm

actually i have no 3750 (for example) accessible in reach, where i could test if there would be the same behaviour

perhaps one of the cisco guys themselves could shed some light on this?

...wasnt able to find documentation regarding this by now...

but thanks for your input, chris

In the meantime I have tested w/ Catalyst 3750G and IOS 15.0(2)SE!

Here the result:

Re: "no keepalive" not working on 6506-E/IOS 15.1 adventerprise/

ok, thanks chris
so it is perhaps related to the dual functionality of this port on a switch.
crap...seems i really have to connect each of the ports then...
task for next monday then :(
