"Vlan1 is up, line protocol is down" What is wrong ?

Although I have installed several switches (CAT5500, CAT6500, CAT3500XL, CAT3550) this is the first time I notice or get "Vlan1 is up, line protocol is down" status. This is my first experience with a Catalyst 4507R running IOS 12.2(25)SG. I activated a port on VLAN1 and the status changed to UP. The states changed to operational when I activated a IEEE 802.1Q trunk. This situation does not occur (as far as I remember) with desktop switches or other series as 3550 and 3750. I am just looking for a formal or official explanation.

You need at least one L2 port in a VLAN (and the port should be UP) to make that VLAN inetrface UP/UP. You can read more about this Autostate feature here

Thanks, I was looking for a formal explanation or paper to confirm.
