Recommended method for upgrading IOS on dual 6513s?

visio
Level 1
Level 1

I wanted to gather a consensus of the recommended best-practice steps for upgrading (2) 6513s core chassis units running IOS with dual-720s in each.

Need to upgrade to add additional support for WS-X6708-10G-3C (10Gb line cards)

The card requires 12.2(18)SXF5 and we are currently at 12.2(18)SXF4. Been up and stable in datacenter environment for over 3 years without any issues on either units.

Thanks!

Had the same question. Great link. Glad I came here first.

Here is some more info to check out.

Can someone review the output and verify the results? The only thing that is blank and questionable is the bootvar that is apparently blank at this point.

Hi Andy

Do you mean BOOTLDR variable is empty? This is fine. BOOTLDR is the boot image that ROM uses for booting.

For the Boot variable, it pointed to disk0: where your disk0 has only one image, and the SUP will use that image to boot up the switch.

HTH,

jerry

Yeah, got that. Thanksm Jerry.

I was going to leave that image since I have the space on the disk. Could I not just load the new version on disk1 and set a boot command to boot from disk1 first then failback to disk0?

BTW, any good recommendations on what IOS version to go up to???

Hi Andy,

You can do that. However, I will recommend you to set the boot string to something like this:

boot system flash disk1:/image_name

boot system flash disk0:/image_name

Also, check the boot sequence before you reboot.

the later SXF should be good. Make sure you have enough RAM though, I cant see how much RAM is your router without the show version output.

You should also download the FPD image.

Regards,

jerry

Hi Andy,

I think the latest SXF is okay if you don't need any new features from SXH. However, I will suggest you to check out the release note of SXF for any open caveats that are affecting you
