Regarding VTP faq's

1)Please let us know all the diffrence between VTP version 1, 2 and 3. How it differs from each other.

2) What precausions we can take to plug in a new switch in VTP domain. What are the possible ways available to make revision number to zero.

3) In transparent mode if VTP domain and passwors is diffrent wether it forwards the information from VTP server or not.

Please clarify.

Thanks in advance,

Regarding VTP faq's

Hello Naveen,

I will talk about the ones that I am aware of

VTP version 1:

  1. Only supports Regular VLAN numbers
  2. A transparent Mode switch will not forward any VTP update to any other switch unless the domain name and version matches

VTP version 2:

  1. Token-Ring Support
  2. Transparent mode does not care about domain name and version matching

Consistency Checks

VTP version 3:

  1. Suports extended VLANs
  2. It does handle and share Private Vlans Information
  3. It provides security against the well known " Junior engineer plugin a switch with a higher vtp revision number "
  4. We have the modes: Server,Client, Transparent and OFF

This is such an interesting topic but before start talking about it here you have a great (and I think way better explanation that the one I could provide to you)

A transparent mode Switch running version 2 will not care about that information and just forwards the VTP update.

Regarding VTP faq's

Hi Julio,

Regarding the VTPv2 transparent mode and domain name handling, there is an ongoing confusion about this. To my experiments on both older and newer Catalysts, there is no difference between VTPv1 and VTPv2 in this aspect. Both VTPv1 and VTPv2 in transparent mode forward VTP messages transparently only

  • if the domain name of the transparent switch is NULL (unconfigured and empty),
  • or if the domain name of the transparent switch matches the domain name indicated in VTP messages

Best regards,
