                   Hi,

i have configured two catalyst 4500x in VSS and i need to reload the active switch, how can i reload the active switch without any downtime and make it active again once it comes back up.

#sh switch virtual

Executing the command on VSS member switch role = VSS Active, id = 1

Switch mode                  : Virtual Switch
Virtual switch domain number : 10
Local switch number          : 1
Local switch operational role: Virtual Switch Active
Peer switch number           : 2
Peer switch operational role : Virtual Switch Standby

Executing the command on VSS member switch role = VSS Standby, id = 2

Switch mode                  : Virtual Switch
Virtual switch domain number : 10
Local switch number          : 2
Local switch operational role: Virtual Switch Standby
Peer switch number           : 1
Peer switch operational role : Virtual Switch Active

Thanks

Hi,

Here are the options;

User Actions

From the VSS active switch command console, you can initiate a VSS switchover or a reload.

If you enter the reload command from the command console, it performs a reload on the switch where reload is issued.

To reload only the VSS standby switch, use the redundancy reload peer command.

To force a switchover from the VSS active to the standby supervisor engine, use the redundancy force-switchover command.

To reset both the VSS active and standby switch, use the redundancy reload shelf command.

Config guide:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/15.1.2/XE_340/configuration/guide/vss.html

Also, when you reboot the active switch, the stand-by will take over.  When the old active finish rebooting, it will be the new stand-by.  At this point you can issue "redundancy force-switchover" to make the new stand-by active.
