Request and response in RIP

Hi,

In Rip a request is sent

when we initialy start the rip process.

when we use clear ip route *

but above two case will request for full routing table means the packet will contain address family identifier as 0 and metric as 16. and the router will send a response with full routing table.

Request can also be used for asking partial update.

My question is

In which case  a partial update will be requested?

suppose a router want update for only 1.1.1.0 network what will be the field of the header in this case.

This is the header for rip

In this case, 1.1.1.0 will be the entry in IP address (4) field above.

HTH.

In Which condition will the partial request will be send

Hi,

I found this in RFC 2453:

"It is further assumed that a Request for specific networks is made only by diagnostic software, and is not used for routing.

In this case, the requester would want to know the exact contents of the routing table and would not want any information hidden or modified."

HTH
