routed jumbo frames

I know you can bump up the 10/100 and gig ports mtu on a global basis. Are these larger frames limited to intra vlan traffic? Can larger frames be sent across vlans?

Re: routed jumbo frames

Hello Bill,

the jumbo frames are not limited to intra-vlan traffic, but all interested Vlans will need the same increase of MTU in order to handle them correctly.

For example we changed MTU to 1520 bytes at layer 3 SVI Vlans in order to support MPLS VPN traffic (they require at least two MPLS labels adding 8 bytes).

At layer2 on trunks we use an MTU of 9216 on TenGiga links

Hope to help

Re: routed jumbo frames

Thanks, but I assume then that you are limited to on the MTU size on layer 3. In otherwords you can't run it up to 9000.

yes but on some L2 interfaces there's no other choice then putting an mtu over 9000 bytes.

Best Regards

Giuseppe
