router usernames and passwords

Hi all

when creating usernames for my routers/switches etc, what will happen if instead of using the line vty 0 4 password command, I type from global config, username "" password ""

will this prompt me for a username and password? or do i need to configure aaa authentication local first ?

Re: router usernames and passwords

In order to use the local USERNAME command for local database then you need to add the LOGIN LOCAL to your VTY lines to use it. You can also enable AAA and set up Authentication to log you in locally as well...
