scheduler allocate vs. scheduler interval

I couldn't exactly understand the difference between the commands 'scheduler allocate' and 'scheduler interval'. On certain platform/IOS combinations, one of the two commands is available, while other platform/IOS combinations have both. I'd like to know the answer to any of the below questions:

1. What's the diff?

2. Should we be using both commands? Or should I prefer the 'scheduler allocate' command, since it's newer?

We have platforms that include Cat6500, Cat4500, Cat3750, C7500, C7200, C3700, C2800, C2600, C1800, C1700, C1600. I thought of using the same command (whichever scheduler command) for all.
