Imagine a dual-homed server to 2 access layer switches and active/standby NIC teaming is used. No conenction between access switches. \

How do you prevent blackholing of traffic when a switch loses its all uplinks? In other words, how does a server know that the access switch has lost its ability to forward traffic?

If you are using Etherchannel ,the 2 switches need to know about each other.  That means 3750s stacked,, 6500 VSS or Nexus VPC.

Hi,

There is an interesting feature called "Link state tracking"

For example look at

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_25_see/configuration/guide/swethchl.pdf

Hope this helps.

Best regards.

Massimiliano,
