setting hostname and setting prompt IOS/Cat0S

As I am more familiar with IOS-i was trying to set the hostname on a cataylst2948 to xry.1

However after doing some research-I came

across the set system name command

and the set system prompt commmnd

I also noticed that this option was available for IOS-

CatOS:

Console> (enable) set system name Switch-A-SJ1

System name set.

Switch-A-SJ1> (enable)

Cisco IOS:

Router(config)#hostname Switch-A-SJ1

Switch-A-SJ1(config)

CatOS:

Switch-A-SJ1> (enable) set prompt Switch-A>

Switch-A> (enable)

Cisco IOS:

Switch-A-SJ1(config)#prompt Switch-A>

Switch-A-SJ1(config)#exit

Switch-A>

what is the difference in these...and

what is the benefit?

I tried the set system name command first,

however the hostname did not change on my cat0S. This is becuse there was a set system

prompt entry in the config. Will the prompt

always override this?

For an insight into the difference I suggest that you connect another Cisco device to the router or switch on which you have differing host name and prompt, run CDP, and look at CDP neighbor from the other Cisco device. Or run something that will pull SNMP data from the router.

System name is what the router or switch will use as it identifies itself to other devices. And by default the prompt will also be generated from the system name. But you have an alternative to set the prompt to be something different if you wish to do that.
