Should I use Flow Control between switches ?

Hi,

I have read that Flow Control helps to prevent buffer issues on the receiving device by using a pause frame. However I do not know if this is a recommended best practice for Switch to Server connections or Switch to Switch connections.

Cisco say that it compliments QoS in preventing packet loss, however, if a pause frame is send during high utilisation this will also cause a pause in packets that have been marked for QoS traversing switches, so I do not see how this helps.

Has anyone else enabled flow control between Switches on Gig links ?

Re: Should I use Flow Control between switches ?

Hi,

Flow-control could prevent buffer problems.

But if you have input errors and enable flow control it could result in output errors.

Actually we had a problem with a Gig port once, and when we disabeled layer 2 flow-control we got better performance.

So I quess that you cannot say whats best,

you have to see in practice what the effects are.
