Slow response to server on diff. subnet-add persistant route?

We only have 1 vlan in my office.

DHCP hands out 192.169.1.x addresses

and some hosts are statically assigned

to 192.168.21.x

All servers are on 192.168.1.x-static

We noticed that the there seems to be an unusual delay going accessing files on the .21.x hosts to servers on the .1x.

We addeded a persistant route to one of the server to point to the .21 gateway-and this seemed to alleviate the problem on one server..

Is this a routing issue on our part?

Slightly confused here. You say you only have 1 vlan but you have 2 different subnets. Could you provide a few more details in your topology eg. what is the .21 gateway ? - is this a router/L3 switch ?

Hi John-

Yes every host is at the default vlan1-

Meaning no a vlans have been

configured on our switches.

The .21 gateway is an interface on router A

All users that have been moved over have been statically assigned this gateway

The users who are still on the .1.x subnet

get 2 gateways assigned to them by DHCP.

Interfaces from router B and C.

All these router are conneced to an MDF

2950 switch.

What type of router are you using. For traffic going from 1.x subnet to 21.x subnet it needs to go via the router interfaces and if these interfaces are overloaded or the router isn't up to snuff, you will experience delays.

If you can post the routers configuration along with a show version, it will certainly help.

It also helps on troubleshooting, to assign a single gateway to clients. If you have multiple gateways on clients, it means the clients reside on 2 subnets.

as far as the the gateway issue...

all the .21.x users are using only 1 gateway on router A

the .1 users-use two gateways that are assigned via DHCP-but both gateways are on the same subnet

The process cpu does not reflect interface utilization. Please post the configuration so we can have a better understating on how your network is configured.

A network diagram may also help.

As for the dual gateway on the same subnet, why not just configure HSRP between the 2 routers instead of sending 2 default gateways via DHCP. You don't know the exact flow of packets with this configuration and you may experience assymetric routing.
