SMI and EMI IOS

just have a simple question.....if we get a 3550 swicth with SMI image......so is it easily upgradable to EMI....or there is some things which we need to follow before buying SMI swicth???? like is there any specif hardware need to upgarde a SMI swicth to EMI????? or all we have to do is an EMI IOS

Hi Guroo,

You can order the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image Upgrade kit (CD-3550-EMI=) to upgrade any Catalyst 3550 Fast Ethernet switch from the SMI to the EMI.

However, unless you purchased your 3550 with an EMI image preinstallation, you must purchase the upgrade kit before you download the EMI image.

All you need to do is download the correct image and files onto your flash.

After the upgrade you will be able to access all the enhanced features like multicast routing, MST etc to name a few

Hi Narayan,

Cisco never recommends to upload EMI image on SMI boxes without going through the upgrade kit lisence.

Also after uploading EMI image on SMI box all EMI avaiable features may not work.

I just shared my experience. I had a switch with a SMI image which was not supprting multicast routing.

All i did was downloaded the exact tar file and it started working.
