Spiking utilization

Our users are complaining of slow network and this is now across board.

Doing a Show processor cpu continuously shows "cpu utilization" shows 2% for 3 times and suddenly spike to 6% and this comes up twice and then comes down to 2%.

How can I find out where this spike is coming from?

We have a Cat 6509 IOS.

If you are using CATOS then you can use the SHOW TOP Command. This will tell you the top talker of the switch. It will show you the utilization of that talker. This way you can get a better idea to who is creating the traffic...If you have an IOS based switch then you can use the ROUTE CACHE FLOW (under interface)and SHOW CACHE FLOW commands. This command will show you the traffic flows through the interface(s). This way you can see who is talking and what protocols and packet sizes they are sending through the interface....Good Luck....

That is extremely low so I would start looking elsewhere for the slowness . Look for physical layer stuff first then start looking for things someone multicasting that should be , this can kill performance.
