Solved: Stack Compatibility Between CISCO 3750X AND CISCO 3750G

Hi Friends

We Have an exsisting stack switch, with 3750G . i Need to add new 12 Port SFP switch to the exsisting stack.

Exsisting stack switch software and ios Image is psted below

My New SFP Switch is 3750X-12 ports switch, i tried upgrading the new SFP Switch with the same image as in master.

But after upgrading when i boot from the upgraded image i am getting an below error

Error:hardware not supported by firmware

Try loading newer software instead

System resetting....

My Doubts

Whether this Hardwares are compatible to add (Cisco 3750X & Cisco 3750G)

what is the least Ios requirement i needed in Cisco 3750X to add it to 3750G stack

I seen several forums telling that we need atleast 12.2(58) ios and few stating 12.2(53) ios. Please confirm the correct hardware and software requirement

You have to have at least 12.2(53) to support the 3750X hardware. Reference.

12.2(55)SE8 would be recommended based on general stability and bug fixes.

Marvin's post is worth it's weight in gold and doesn't deserve a "4" rating.

Alos these 3750G Stack is a core .. (Different buildings connects from here). So its required Layesr 3 capabailites

Could you tell me to run the stack with layser 3 capapbailities, whats the IOS train i need to use on Both switches?

Make sure your 3750X is running the same feature set as the rest of the stack, i. e. IP Services.

Hello Safwan.

12.2(53) might be available for some 3750x and not for other in the cisco support website... so I would say:

1- Currently at least you will need to have 12.2(55).

2- For 3750x platform note that all iOS images are either universal or ip base.

3- For 3750G platform note that all iOS images are either ip base or ip services.

Having said that, you will need to run at least 12.2(55) train in both 3750G and 3750X switches. If you need layer 3 capabilities chose universal for 3760x and ipservices for 3750G.

Currently the 3750G Stack having ipservice image(C3750-IPSERVICESK9-M) and new 3750X has universal image(

c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2)

when i try to downrage the 3750X to (C3750-IPSERVICESK9-M) it throwed me an hardware error

So in a nutshell

current IOS

Old 3750G Stack:12.2(52)SE -C3750-IPSERVICESK9-M

New 3750X STACK:3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2

1) if i use 12.2(58) - c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin same ios in both 3750G & 3750X Switch , it will work as stack ?

To run IP Services on the 3750X, you'll need the universal image AND an IP Service feature license. (The license is something "new" to the -E/-X 3750, i.e. not found on your 3750Gs.)

It's possible to run different feature sets within a 3750 stack, but not sure if there's any special requirements for a mixed stack (i.e. original series 3750s and the later -E/-X series).

PS:

Also BTW, mixed 3750 stacks "take away" some of the advantages of the -E/-X 3750 stacks.

You will not be able to get the 3750X to boot up or load this filename because it's designed for 3750G.

For running Layer 3 we dont require any special ios??

As what Joseph has stated, 3750X needs to run the "universal" plus you need to ensure the 3750X has the "IP Services" license installed. Use the command "sh license" to verify on the 375X.

Yes and no. You're running an evaluation license for IP Services, which means you have the right license but it will expire in 8 weeks and 4 days (then it will be just IP Base).

As I noted in my earlier post, original series 3750s don't support hardware licensing. Legally you need "paper" licenses. Technically, feature set depends on installed image (and yours shows IP Services).

So currently if i use 12.2.55-SE5 Software version in all switches and use

below IOS image in

WS-C3750X-12S : c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin

and below image in

WS-C3750G-12S : c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin

You should be able to stack them, but again, you're 3750X's IP Service license will expire.

Yes, evaluation license will stop after 8 weeks. You can purchase a licenses for IP Services.

IP Services isn't required for stacking, but I don't know if original series running IP Services will work with -X with IP Base.

Once you add the switch with evaluation licence it will work. But if you have any ipservices features command in the Master switch running it will only be supported till 8 weeks and 4 days with this in stack.After that this switch will be no more in stack.

But My final Doubt is still unclear,

2) Existing C3750G core stack Doesnt have support license(please see below error) , so will it create any issues or i can add the 3750X Switch with these Stack with 3750x(ipbase license) Alone?
