Stacking Switches

Hi,

We are looking to upgrade some of the switches in our school. In most switch rooms we have 2950s (WS-C2950G-24-EI) and we would like to add a 3560 switch (WS-C3560G-48PS) to each room.

My question is, is it possible to stack these switches together or add the 3560 to the 2950 cluster?

Thanks very much!

Edward

Edward,

3560 switches are no stackable. If stacking is a requirement, go with 3750s

Avoid clustering also its a royal pain troubleshooting or locating devices in a cluster. Just tie them together and give the 3560 it's own ip address in the same subnet as the 2950.

Hi Andrew,

The question I am interested in is do you want a Layer 2 or a Layer 3 switch?

The only Layer 2/3 stackable switch is the 3750 while for Layer 2 alone the 2755 is a candidate.

Cisco Catalyst 2975 Switch with LAN Base Software

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps10081/data_sheet_c78-502660.html

One of the key features:

48 10/100/1000 PoE ports and 4 Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) uplinks

High-speed stacking for up to nine switches and support for cross-stack EtherChannel

Unified stack management to simplify management of the network access layer

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, to everyone.

We have a fully switched network here so the layer 2 switch you recommended looks perfect for what we need. The only problem is it's double the price of the 3560! We will have to see what our budget can stretch to.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions!

Edward
