STP Convergence

At what point does a STP re-convergence begins? Is it immediately following a link failure, or after a switch hasn't recieved a BPDU update within a certain amount of attempts? Also, when does the 20 Second Maxage timer begin?

Re: STP Convergence

If a link fails, the STP information associated with it is immediately aged out and the convergence can proceed. The aging time is precisely used if STP does not detect any link down. In that case, STP is still able to detect a failure on a link that does not pass BPDUs for max-age... RSTP/MST expect a periodic message from the direct neighbor and use 3xhello-time to age out the information faster than max-age.

Francois
