STP vs SH

Basic question here, I apologize for the simplicity but what is the difference between Spanning Tree and Split Horizon?

Re: STP vs SH

Hi, Bill:

STP is a layer 2/switching technology that prevents a packet from being endlessly forwarded in circles on a switched network by blocking redundant links.

Split horizon is a tool used by routers running distance vector routing proctocols when advertising routes to prevent a packet from being caught in a loop on a routed network after reconvergence.

Makes sense?

Re: STP vs SH

STP is a layer 2 loop prevention tool.  STP uses BPDU to learn and block ports to break the loop.  SH is a layer 3 loop prevention tool.  SH states that route learned from an interface will not be advertised back out to that same interface.
