Hi Sham,

There are several parameters that can be configured in STP that will determine the state of ports in the final stable spanning tree:

1. Switch priority: by configuring this value, you can control the selection of the root switch, which will partly influence which ports can be root ports on other switches.

2. Port cost: this will influence the selection of root ports, designated ports and blocked ports.

3. Port priority: this can also influence the selection of root ports, designated ports or blocked ports, when no other tie-breaking value is present.

There can be 100 pages written about this, depending on the level of detail one intends to write.

If you come up with a specific configuration, then I can help you sort out your configuration and control the port states.

Hi,

How we can define the port cost and port priority,in a switch which is the command used for configuring this?

Regards,

Sham.

Hi Sham,

Both parameters have to be defined in interface configuration mode.

Port cost (1 to 65535):

spanning-tree cost xx

This will modify the port cost for all vlans.

spanning-tree vlan x cost yy

This will modify the port cost for vlan x.

Port priority (0 to 255):

spanning-tree port-priority xx

This will modify the port priority for all vlans.

spanning-tree vlan x port-priority yy

This will modify the port priority for vlan x.

Cheers:
