So lets say someone fatfingered the filename of a bin file on a switch. The filename instead of being just filename.bin is instead \192.168.1.1filename.bin
How in the world do you delete that? Is there an escape character you need to use or something?

Try the following, (assuming it is in the bootflash directory)..
Delete bootflash:192.168.1.1filename.bin

If you have CatOS you will need to issue the squeeze command also.

You can either delete the flash file or rename it
delete flash:
rename flash:
