Hi all
can anyone tell me the rule of thumb for say. if I want lots of networks with say 512 hosts, so lots of big networks, and what do I do if I want lots of small networks.
what is the rule of thumb to work out how many networks/hosts i can get depending on how many I want?

You have to understand really how subnetting is setup . The mask determines how many hosts are in each subnet. One of the best places to learn this is www.learntosubnet.com .

You can use an IP Subnetter tool (there a few freeware programs available) to help you with this.
